The first volume titled “Thawing Out” is a play on the word “coming out” as a metaphor. In this case Iceman is dealing with that obstacle. This new series’ first volume tackles the issue of how how individuals in the LGBT community struggles specially in self-disclosure of their sexual orientation or of their gender identity (because there is an underlying hate against them). X-men comics have always focused on a common human theme of good versus evil and they have also included storylines and themes about prejudice and racism, all of which have persisted throughout all X-men series in one form or another. The quote above comes from Iceman’s father as he is arguing with an individual from a cult in the comic that lives to destroy “mutants” however they usually use threatening language and manipulate the bible in a horrible way (for hate). If you read the first few issues of X-men you can see he is a complete different character. Not because, he is portrayed as a gay man but because he is a different character. To see Iceman as not the original X-men is a bit hard for me. “What you’re talking about goes against the stuff that makes the book holy” -Iceman’s DadĪt first I was skeptical about this series but it started growing on me.
